Juneteenth 2026: Your Guide to Celebrating Freedom in Miami-Dade
Juneteenth isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s the day freedom finally reached the people who had been waiting for it the longest. In Miami-Dade, that spirit shows up in how we gather, what we create, and the legacy we choose to honor.
This year, more than 20 events across the county are marking the occasion with art, music, film, community, and conversation. We pulled together the ones that matter most, organized by vibe, so you can build your own Juneteenth weekend.
Florida’s Emancipation Story: Before Juneteenth, There Was May 20th
Most people know June 19, 1865, as the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved people were free. But Florida has its own emancipation date, and it came a full month earlier.
On May 10, 1865, Union Brigadier General Edward M. McCook arrived in Tallahassee to accept the surrender of Confederate forces. He established his headquarters at the Knott House, just four blocks from the State Capitol. Ten days later, on May 20, 1865, General McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation from the steps of that same house, officially ending slavery in the state of Florida.
That date, the 20th of May, has been celebrated by Black Floridians for more than 160 years. Long before Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, communities across the state held parades, picnics, church services, and gatherings every May 20th to mark the day freedom was proclaimed on Florida soil.
The timeline tells a larger story: President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but enforcement depended on the presence of Union troops. In Florida, slaveholders refused to acknowledge the proclamation, and enslaved people had no legal means of learning the news. Freedom didn’t arrive by document. It arrived by force, city by city, over the course of two and a half years.
Florida’s Emancipation Day (May 20) and Juneteenth (June 19) represent different chapters of the same truth: liberation was not a single moment but a process, delayed by those who profited from its absence. Both dates are honored in Florida today. In 2020, Leon County became the first county in the state to officially recognize May 20th as a government holiday.
When we celebrate Juneteenth in Miami-Dade, we carry both dates with us. We honor the national story and the Florida story. We remember that freedom was fought for, waited on, and finally spoken into existence on porches and in public squares across this state.

Pick one from each category, or go all in on a single day. Juneteenth weekend in Miami-Dade runs from June 13 through June 22, with the biggest concentration on June 19 itself. Most events are free. All of them are worth your time.
