Using S.M.A.R.T. goals to stay on track

By: Naima Stennnett M.S, M.D

What are S.M.A.R.T Goals?

S.M.A.R.T goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. As a Family Medicine physician I help my patients achieve S.M.A.R.T goals to help them focus their efforts over a specific lifestyle change or goal(s) with a timeline in mind; three, six, nine or twelve months. This year as many people make plans to make changes in the New Year it is important we avoid the same pitfalls that make these goal unsuccessful year after year. Using a S.M.A.R.T method will help you stick to your desire wether it is to loose weight, run a 5k, get more financially savvy or increase travel on a budget. Below is a template to help anyone to draft your own S.M.A.R.T goals in 2019.

Follow this guideline for any goal. Here I have broken down a S.M.A.R.T. goal around fitness.

SPECIFIC

What do I want to accomplish? What actions will you take?

Example:

I would like to lose 20lbs in 8-12 weeks starting February 01, 2019

MEASURABLE

How will I keep track of my efforts?

Example:

Weight check weekly, aim for 2lbs/week

ACHIEVABLE

Is the goal practical?

Do you have the necessary tools/resources?

Examples:

  • Calorie counting using myfitnesspal, track my cardio activity on cell phone or meal prep on Sundays
  • Have accountability partner: gym or diet partner
  • Budget 1hr four times a week to workout

RELEVANT

Why is this goal important?

Example:

  • I would like to look my best
  • I want to ensure I’m healthy
  • I have an upcoming special occasion

TIME-BOUND

Did you select a goal that could be completed in a set time frame? More importantly if you a have a deadline in mind, can it be realistically be completed in the time you selected?

Example:

I would like to start on 02/01/2019 with my final weigh in 04/30/2019

Now you can do this for any goal. Just make sure its a goal you are passionate about and will do the necessary steps to achieve it. Write the goal down somewhere you can see it everyday and stay on track. Good luck with your 2019 S.M.A.R.T. Goals!
